The state - owned Polish enterprise LOT began operations from Warsaw in January 1929 using Junkers fleet, previously operated by Aerolot and Aero. Lockhead 10-A Electra were added in 1936, followed by Douglas DC-2s.
The second World War devastated much of Poland including its aviation infrastructure. After the war, it was difficult to re-establish the air transport industry due to political pressure.

It wasn't until the eighties that business was beginning to grow.
LOT slowly revived its network, but the nineties, which became a buoyant decade for the airline.

In 2003 LOT became a member of Star Alliance, which include prominent airlines like Lufthansa, Thai, United, Singapore Airlines and others (16 in total).
In 2005 Britain's Business Traveller magazine voted LOT as the "Best Airline in Central and Eastern Europe" for the eighth consecutive year!
