Zakopane, Poland's premier mountain resort, is one of the country's most popular holiday destinations, both in the winter for skiing, and in the summer, for hiking and camping. Until recently it has been visited primarily by Poles and travellers from Eastern Europe. But fame of its natural beauty, world-class ski slopes and great value for money has spread far and wide and today it attracts many visitors from overseas as well.

Zakopane, as we know it, is only four centuries old. It was originally founded as a shepherds' and farmers' settlement. Its fame as a holiday destination began only in the second half of the 19th century and by the turn of the century it was connected to the rail network, starting a new chapter in its history as a health resort. Pope John Paul's visits to Zakopane have become very important events in the town's history and have done much to promote tourism in the area.

If you're not a sports buff, don't be put off; In addition to the beautiful natural surroundings, Zakopane also offers the usual round of museums and galleries. It's a pleasure just to take in the invigorating environment of the town, which has a laid back feel to it. Traditional wooden cottages are made from roughly cut logs and the 'Zakopane-style' architecture which features delicately carved patterns and intricate woodwork decorations. It is also known for its fascinating highland folklore, as Zakopane is something of a Mecca or mountain culture from all over the world. In fact it plays host to the International Festival of Highland Folklore every year in September.

The complex consists of four pensions. It is situated at the entry to the Białego Valley, in the vicinity of the mountain stream of Biały and attractive walking areas. It is only 10 minutes' walk from the center of the town. All the rooms have private bathrooms and are equipped with satellite TV, telephone and radio, the apartments have fridges as well. All rooms overlook the mountains, most of them have balconies. In the main building there are: dinning room, bar with a fireplace, conference room, swimming pool (gratis for the pension's guests), sauna and gym. On the premises there is also an all-year-round tennis court, children's playground, garages and a parking facility.

The pension is constructed of wood, and both its architecture and interior decoration were maintained in the Podhale style. Anusine Oczko is a medium sized pension, situated in a quiet and nice area of Zakopane, but very close to the town center (only 15 minutes' walk to Krupówki street). In vicinity there are wide variety of recreations (swimming pools, tennis courts, ski lifts, fitness, playing fields and tourist trails). "Pod Berlami " is a small hotel of high standard and also a conference centre which is owned by the Jagiellonian University. The hotel has recently been rebuilt and redecorated. Located in a quiet, green area in the centre of Zakopane, "Pod Berlami" can accommodate 36 guests in fully equipped comfortable single and double rooms and in two suites.
